What’s Happening in the Water at Hillside Trout Fishery ? What you’re seeing in the fishery is called Potamogeton pusillus or lesser pondweed , a native pondweed that naturally sheds its hair-thin tips as part of its lifecycle. It’s been brought on by heat, light, and the usual calm weather that lets this stuff hang around in the water column. It’s harmless , Annoying to Anglers? Yes by. But it’s not choking the place, and it’s actually sign of a healthy, well-balanced water quality. There is plenty information online also. We as always ran tests on the water today as we do each & every week in line with current water board requests. Our Nitrates, pH and oxygen levels are all coming back clear 🙂 This is not an algae bloom as some would suggest , there is no natural chemical imbalance, no oxygen crash — we test our water weekly and manage it closely. We also have our Aeration system running to ensure enough dissolved oxygen is put back into our water during hot spells. Fish are still being caught by Anglers all be it further down the water table in the cooler depths — and are Healthy , Hard Fighting at that. This week we’ve had both Natural & Stocked brown trout being caught by Anglers using various methods , along with plenty of Rainbows - the biggest caught is around 14lb by Richard Quirey on Saturday. Best returns are coming on slow intermediate lines or sinking tip lines and various patterns. Our Evening C & R sessions have seen better surface action on dry fly and buzzers — it’s a case of being tuned in to what feeding pattern is happening. Stocking wise we await the availability of our stockist in the next week or so now the weather is starting to become more favourable Things will settle as weather cools slightly this week and rain is expected throughout the week - this in turn should help the plant continue to break down. We’re managing weed by hand and keeping the fishery in the best condition possible as seen in our work party last week & as always we insure not to over indulge weeding so we don’t compromise fly life or the ecosystem. Thanks again to those who continue to support North Downs Friendliest Trout Fly Fishery and understood that we’re not in the business of lies — we have to let mother nature take her course. A few weeks of these fragments beats months of weed beds that often choke fisheries We hope this will address any queries or concerns that Anglers may have.
